He is renowned for his dramatic and comedy roles and is considered to be an American popular culture icon. Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was a Concord, California native to Janet Marylyn Hanks, a hospital worker, and Amos Mefford Hanks an itinerant cook. His mother was named "Fraga" and his father was English. Tom was born into what he calls"a "fractured" family. He was not an actor at the college level and credits the failure to get a role in a college production with launching his professional career. He was a part of the auditions in downtown Cleveland for an open-air community theatre production. Then it was announced that he would be invited to Cleveland by the director. This was the point the point where his acting career started.
